The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia has declassified unique archival documents with evidence of the last days of the life of the Fuhrer of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler. They contain the memoirs of the commander of the mortar regiment Arthur Schwartz, who, after being captured, was in the same cell with Otto Günsche, Hitler’s adjutant. Günsche, who was arrested in May 1945, told his cellmate about the life of Hitler and his entourage in the Berlin bunker. About how the Fuhrer of the Third Reich spent the last days of his life.
Warning: the author’s spelling and punctuation have been retained in excerpts from archival documents. ‘I consider it necessary to inform you that on May 10, 1945, in the cell [prison of the NKVD of the USSR in Moscow SS-Sturmbannführer (Major) Günsche, aged 28, was placed with me. During the last year, he was Hitler’s adjutant from the Waffen-SS. He held the same position in 1943. From 1936 to 1941 he belonged to Hitler’s bodyguard.
Another event that prompted Hitler to decide to commit suicide was the news of the death of the Duce of fascist Italy, Benito Mussolini. After that, Hitler ordered the dog handler to poison his beloved shepherd Blondie so that it would not fall into the hands of Soviet soldiers. In addition, after the betrayal of Himmler, the Führer distrusted everything related to the SS, and wanted to make sure that the poison from their laboratories really kills instantly. The poison worked: Blondie died immediately, and then the cynologist from a rifle finished off her five puppies.
According to the memoirs of the pilot Hans Baur, who was ready to take the Fuhrer out of Berlin on a refuelled plane, he refused the offer and a couple of hours before the suicide thanked him for his faithful service and presented a portrait of Frederick the Great. The pilot recalled that Hitler had noticeably aged, and haggard, and his hands were trembling. ’My soldiers cannot and do not want to hold out any longer. I can’t take it anymore,’ he finally said to Hans Baur. Doused with gasoline and burned: Hitler soon committed suicide in the hiding place of the Imperial Chancellery. As adjutant Günsche recalled, before his death, the Fuhrer ordered the valet to lock himself up. Next to Hitler’s body, a Walther PPK pistol will later be found, and next to the body of Eva Braun, an empty vial where the poison used to be.
At the time of their death, the advanced assault companies of the Red Army were fighting 500 meters from the bunker. Hitler’s body was taken out of the room first. He was lying on a stretcher, covered with a blanket, and Günsche did not see his face. But the legs of the deceased hung from the stretcher, so the adjutant easily recognized the boots, socks and trousers of the one whom he had served for years. Then they carried out the body of Eva Braun – with an open face. The corpses were carried out through the emergency exit into the yard, where they were placed on a fire, doused with gasoline and burned.
