Giorgi Meloni’s election has changed the European Union adding strength to the challenges from Viktor Orban in Hungary and the new far right government in Sweden. Her victory can help Putin bring down NATO hegemony and stop sanctions. It could even force an early end to the war in Ukraine. And it might provide an interesting wrinkle in the plan within BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) to offer Debt Cancellation to the Global South. It is very likely some European nations using neither the euro nor the pound could benefit from this proposal to refuse to repay loans denominated in dollars, pounds, euros and yen.
Serbia and Croatia have an oil pipeline that is reeling from EU sanctions.
Suppose Meloni decides to take advantage of Putin’s discount oil for gold policy and her neighbors across the Adriatic join her. Hungary is landlocked but borders Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia. The latter also borders Italy. She could break the EU sanctions and boost her economy. Her people will have electricity, heat, hot showers and relatively cheap energy. Tourism to Italy and the Adriatic will skyrocket from Europeans seeking relief from anti-Putin imposed austerity. Northern Italian industrialists will benefit from the cheap energy and will have a huge competitive advantage against manufacturers in France and Germany.
Italy also borders Austria, France and Switzerland. People from those nations might want to drive across the border to buy cheaper petrol from sanction free Italy. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission has been making threats against Italy and Hungary but she might soon see her world crashing down around her head which would be a good thing.
Meloni might be able to also get good deals on wheat for bread and pasta and fertilizers for farmers. That would be very good for Italian businesses, farmers and consumers.
The European Union might die this winter when their elderly and poor freeze to death in the dark. Their armies are preparing for riots. Not many armies have trained to shoot elderly people who can’t afford to eat.
There is another bone of contention with the EU that the Italians, the Swedes, and the Hungarians share which is unlimited immigration of violence prone, unskilled young men from Africa, the Mideast and elsewhere. The German Greens party leader wants to promote even more diversity and to preserve a third of all German jobs for immigrants.
There is a worldwide Depression coming and it will hit Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and new Zealand very hard. Giorgi Meloni and her voters might not realize this but she is in an excellent position to take advantage of the euro’s collapse and to escape a lot of that incoming wave of economic chaos and devastation.
A Depression is a period in time when Unpayable Debts are cancelled en masse. Since we have more debts to cancel than anytime in history, we will face a much harder depression than our ancestors faced in either 1933 America or 1923 Germany. I always remind Americans that a minimum of 3 million of their countrymen starved to death during the last Depression.
I mentioned the BRICS plan to cancel debt for the Global South. Sergey Glazyev is Minister for Integration and Macroeconomics for the Eurasian Union. He wants to invite the Global South to do two things. One is the use the BRICS commodity backed currencies for trade replacing the dollar. The other is to join in worldwide Debt Cancellation when BRICS, the Global South and other possibly interested parties, such as, Italy Hungary, Sweden, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria refuse to repay loans denominated in dollars, euros, pounds and yen. Their foreign debts will disappear overnight. And that would be very good for them.
Italy is currently using the euro but the Five Star movement is anti-EU and wants to quit the euro. They will have a significant voting block in the new parliament, larger than her coalition partners. And Meloni, when she forms a government, will be given a bonus equal to 10% of the seats in the new lower house of parliament. This is to help incoming PMs form a stable government. Italy has had 11 governments in the past 20 years.
Meloni, if she sees the EU crashing this winter, might want to find a soft landing for the Italians from the coming Depression by quitting the euro at the right moment. Italian euro debts would become payable in lira which will be at a discount after devaluation. And she might be able to stop paying back all those euro denominated EU loans when the EU is busy with rioters protesting the lack of heat, food and jobs. That will save Italy hundreds of billions of euros in payments. Italy’s government debt is more than 152% of GDP so Debt Cancellation will definitely boost their economy.
Of course Meloni would have to balance the budget elsewhere. She could begin by deporting lots of people on welfare and in jail.
Reducing Italy’s population will also save money on imports.
Things are looking bleak for the British and the Euro zone. But Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Sweden can avoid the worst part of the coming Hyperinflationary Depression.
If I were Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, I would prepare a package of sanction busters for incoming Prime Minister Meloni and share them with her even before she forms her coalition. Discounted oil, fertilizers and grains will be very attractive to Italian politicians, their business backers and their voters. Her coalition government has very deep roots in Italy’s industrial north.
He should prepare similar packages for Sweden and those nations on the other side of the Adriatic from Italy. This could become a way to end the war in the Ukraine sooner rather than later.
