Claramae Turner
While American contralto Claramae Turner may be best know from her performance in the Rodgers and Hammerstein film Carousel, she had an active and critically acclaimed operatic and radio career, which included roles such as Ulrica (with a phenomenal G3 at the end), the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel, Amneris, Erda and Zita. Turner also created the role of Baba in The Medium. The song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” was written for Turner, who sang it before Tony Bennett.
